Most people I find EAT MORE carbs (bad ones) than lean protein.  Protein is what helps build the muscle.  Your muscles can use only 30 grams of protein at any time, a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association notes.  Any more than the 30 grams will be stored as fat.  Aim for a MIN. of 46 grams of protein per day.

As we age, we start to lose some muscle mass and lifting weights helps you maintain and build on what you have and the result is your metabolism will stay HIGH!

Sleep!  As fes as two sleepless nights can mess with your metabolism, increasing levels of the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates hunger, and decreasing levels of the hormone leptin, which tells you to stop eating.  Not enough sleep will also cause insulin resistance, interfering with how your metabolism processes fat, which leads to weight gain.  Aim for 7-8 hrs. of sleep per night.

Too much STRESS.  I find it to be impossible to live in a stress free, worry-free life, but CONSTANT anxiety can cause your adrenal gland to raise CORTISOL!  High levels of this stress HORMONE can change how your metabolism stores fat, which sends FLAB to our BELLY.  This is the worst place to have FAT, because it affects the vital organs and does not look to good in a bikini!

Cardio.  A vigorous workout will raise your internal temperature and will create some inflammation and deplete your energy stored.  It takes extra energy for your body to go back to its normal resting state.  INTERVAL training are a great way to up your calorie burn.  To keep your metabolism HIGH for hours after you've left the gym, you need to exercise once or twice a week for 45min. at a steady level that makes it difficult to talk.  Also, incorporate resistance training at least 3 times a week.  If you can talk to your buddy while you are engaging in cardio, you are not working out intense enough!

Last but not least, eat MORE FIBER.  The fiber in fruit helps stabilize blood sugar levels, keeping you metabolism humming away.  The antioxidants in fruit and vegetables help your body get rid of the FREE RADICALS.  Free Radicals can harm your healthy cells.  These cells are needed to keep your metabolism going strong.  Aim for 23 - 35grams of fiber per day.
