WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION - BY DR. JOHN REES OF MILTON CHIROPRACTIC

The Importance of whole food supplements

As a nation, we eat poor-quality foods that have been stripped of nutrients.  We do not consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables.  Many of us get our whole grains from instant rice, refined wheat breads, pastas, and cereal. We eat a tremendous amount of prepackaged, pre-made meals. One-quarter of Americans eat at fast food restaurants each day. Americans are overfed and undernourished.

We eat plenty but are still starving

The foods we eat are not providing our bodies with the nutrition it needs to survive and be healthy. We are starving our bodies and we are sick. We suffer from diabetes, heart attacks, obesity, and the list goes on and on.

There is good news

Given proper nutrition, the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. If properly fed and given the right nutrients, the human body is designed to repair itself. To do so, we need to eat a healthier diet, exercise, and take high-quality supplements made from whole foods. Whole food supplements supply our bodies with nutrients we are not getting from our diet, all the vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and phytonutrients that foods possess in a way that nature intended, in a whole food form.

Only whole food supplements complete the nutritional gap

Whole food supplements are made by concentrating foods for use in supplements. When processed correctly, they supply a multitude of the plant's components. Foods provide nutrients that work synergistically. They work together to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.

Whole food supplements versus isolated nutrients

Vitamins in their natural state always exist as living complexes with specific synergistic co-factors, enzymes, phytonutrients and organic mineral-activators, and never as isolated single factors.  A vitamin needs all of its synergists to function.  Further, there are literally hundreds of such synergists, most of which have not yet been studied but are nevertheless very important.

Whole food supplements are not high dosage vitamins

It is only possible to create high dosage vitamins if you isolate one fraction of the vitamin complex in crystallized form or synthesize one fraction as in synthetic vitamins.  Both crystallized and synthetic would more accurately be identified as drugs and not supplements.

Vitamins C & E as examples

In naturally occurring Vitamin C Complex, the ascorbic acid portion comprises only about 5% of the whole complex.  Similarly, alpha tocopherol only comprises a small percentage of Vitamin E Complex.

Legally, the only portion of the Vitamin C Complex that is allowed to be called Vitamin C is the ascorbic acid portion and the only part of the Vitamin E Complex that can be called Vitamin E is the alpha tocopherol piece.

Do Synthetic vitamins function as well as natural whole food vitamins?

Living systems are complex and specific in their need for building materials.  In addition, living systems are constantly breaking down cells, organs and tissues, and rebuilding and repairing them.  For these processes the body must have a continual supply of high quality material.  The body has a very precise design, which is so incredibly intricate and  complex that even with all the scientific and medical research thus far, we have only scratched the surface of understanding it.
