Summer Sundays begin at Rehoboth Beach Library

Summer Sundays have started at Rehoboth Beach Library. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.

Airman Robert J. Gallo completes basic training

Air Force Airman Robert J. Gallo graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Gallo earned distinction as an honor graduate.  He is the son of Tomasa Gallo of Tiffany Drive, Rehoboth Beach, and Modesto Gallo of Villa Circle, Lewes.

The airman is a 2010 graduate of Sussex Technical High School, Georgetown.

Pvt. Troy S. Springer graduates from basic training

Army National Guard Pvt. Troy S. Springer has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Springer is the son of Maureen Springer of Fringetree Drive, West Chester, Pa., and grandson of Eileen Thompson of Marshall Road, Rehoboth Beach.

He is a 2010 graduate of Henderson High School, West Chester.

Navy Seaman Recruit Stephanie A. Holden completes training

Navy Seaman Recruit Stephanie A. Holden, niece of Crystal A. Shear of Milford, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Holden completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor. Holden is a 2008 graduate of Milford Christian High School.

Joshua L. Perry graduates from basic training

Hunsucker is the son of Herbert and Patricia Hunsucker of Lewes. He is a 2001 graduate of Hodgson Vocational Technical High School, Newark.

West Rehoboth Children’s Summer Program seeks support

Each summer the West Rehoboth Children and Youth Program provides six activity-filled weeks for approximately 35 students in kindergarten through middle school, ages 5 to 15. This award-winning program for disadvantaged students cannot survive without extra public support.  A donation of $75 will sponsor a child for a week in the summer program at the WRCYP. Any amount of donation will be appreciated to be used for field trips, special reading help, extra materials and activities. The summer program begins June 18.

Program leaders are asking for help in sponsoring a child or two this summer. Make checks payable to WRCYP of West Side New Beginnings and mail to WRCYP, 19801 Norwood St., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Donations will be accepted through June 15. Contributions are tax deductible as West Side New Beginnings Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Tables available for Indian River Fire Co. yard sale

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company is planning a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 26, at the fire station on Oak Orchard Road. Table rental reservations are being taken now. Large tables are $10 each or sellers can bring their own table for $8. There will be a bake sale, and food will be available. Contact Eric Ruckle at 245-1539.

 

Delaware's Medal of Honor recipients subject of May 22 program

Rehoboth Beach Public Library will host a history program at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 22,  when speaker Ed Okonowicz will present "Delaware’s Medal of Honor Recipients and WWII hero George Welch.”

The Medal of Honor, established during the Civil War, is the nation's highest form of recognition of heroic military achievement. This talk looks at the medal's history, stories about a number of recipients and, in particular, military service personnel from Delaware who earned the rare recognition for their acts of valor.

World War II:  Rehoboth Beach exhibit to open May 26

A special exhibit, World War II: Rehoboth Beach, will be on display from Saturday, May 26, through March 2013 at the Rehoboth Beach Museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday,  and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday between Memorial Day and Labor Day.   Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens, military personnel and students; $2 for children ages 13 to 17; and free for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and children ages 12 or younger. DAR to hold wreath-laying ceremony May 28

The Daughters of the American Revolution will have a wreath-laying ceremony at 10 a.m., Monday, May 28, at the Lewes Presbyterian Church on Kings Highway in Lewes.  Mayor Jim Ford and Rep. Ruth Briggs King will speak. The Cape Henlopen JROTC will present the colors. Virginia Trader , vice president general, will represent the national DAR. Marge Frampton, state regent, will represent the state DAR . Dr Gloria Lester will represent the Col. David Hall Chapter of the DAR. Several members will be dressed in Colonial costume.

Delaware Veterans Coalition to meet May 29

The Delaware Veterans Coalition will hold a general membership meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, at the FOP lodge at 1584 Kitts Hummock Road, Dover. Take the Kitts Hummock exit past Dover AFB and follow the signs.

All Delaware veterans are invited to attend regardless of whether they are members. The coalition was formed a year ago to work directly with elected officials and other community leaders to identify political and social issues relevant to all generations of Delaware's veterans and their families and to advocate for issues that benefit veterans.

The coalition website at www.DelawareVeteransCoalition.com lists its mission, events, health news, legislation affecting veterans, a membership application and voter registration information.

Reserve tickets by June 1 for Miss Delaware luncheon, awards

As part of Miss Delaware pageant week, there will be a celebratory luncheon for Miss Delaware 2011 Maria Cahill to begin at noon, Saturday, June 16, at Michelle's Restaurant in Dover Downs Hotel and Casino. The purpose is to celebrate Cahill's year of service to the Miss Delaware organization.  Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

A 2012 contestant reception and awards celebration will be held at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino Saturday, June 16, following the 2012 Miss Delaware Pageant. The event includes a light buffet, cash bar, DJ and dancing.  Tickets are $20 each. New this year, guests can pay for tickets in the lobby during the preliminaries. Candidates for Friends of Lewes Public Library Board of Directors must apply by June 15

The Friends of the Lewes Public Library is seeking candidates from the greater Lewes area to serve a three-year appointment on the board of directors. Interested individuals must be current members of the Friends of the Lewes Public Library. To be considered, send a completed application to Candace Vessella, president, Friends of the Lewes Public Library Board of Directors, P.O. Box 356, Lewes, DE 19958, by Friday, June 15. Applications may be picked up at the library or downloaded from the Friends page of the Lewes Public Library website at www.leweslibrary.org.

The purpose of the Friends board of directors is to promote the library and help raise funds for its use, such as purchasing lending materials including books, sponsoring performances and enhancing the children's program. Register by June 19 for Girl Scouts' Twilight Dance Camp June 26 to 28

The Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay will sponsor a Twilight Dance Camp, for girls from kindergarten through fifth grade, from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, June 26 through 28. The camp will be held at Coastal Dance Academy, Village of Five Points, 33323-41 E. Chesapeake St., Lewes. Registration deadline is June 19

Activities will include stretching, tumbling, center combinations and progression. The cost is $65 per participant.  Campers should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. Millsboro Public Library seeks donations for July 27 and 28 book sale

The Friends of the Millsboro Public Library are gearing up for its annual book sale, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28.

The library will gratefully accept gently used books, hardbacks and paperbacks of fiction and nonfiction for adults and children, until July 16.   Encyclopedias, Readers’ Digest Condensed Books, textbooks and magazines cannot be accepted.

Books should be brought to the library at 219 State St. in Millsboro during regular library hours.   The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday,  Wednesday and Friday; from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday. Itinerant Dance Theater looks for dancers for June 28 show in Lewes

Itinerant Dance Theater is looking for dancers for a Thursday, June 28 show at the Lewes Public Library. Dancers should be 18 and over. Body type and age not an issue; Itinerant Dance Theater does not do pink tights or pointe shoes. Those who no longer dance or perform and would like to return, actors or singers who dance, dancers looking for resume credits and others are invited. IDT’s library shows are family friendly comedy dance with singing and acting.  Members will have one rehearsal per week, currently 4 to 7 p.m. on Sundays in the Dover area. Italian Heritage Club meets third Monday of each month

For those who enjoy Italian foods, music and the culture of Italy, the Italian Heritage Club, a social club, meets on the third Monday of each month in Oak Orchard to enjoy learning and enjoying the traditions of Italy and its peoples. Among its activities are potluck dinners of traditional cuisine, attending festivals, bocce playing and also listening to members' talks of families immigrating to America and their journeys in adapting to a new country.  Whether of Italian descent or just enamored of Italy, all are invited to attend. Sussex Stamp Club meets second Tuesday

The Sussex County Stamp Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist, 307 Federal St. in Milton. The next meeting  will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m., May 8, in the church hall. All are invited who have an interest in stamp collecting, whether beginners or seasoned philatelists.
