Ina Goad Steele, retired teacher

Ina Goad Steele, 90, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011, at the Glebe in Daleville, Va. She was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Moneta, Va., daughter of the late Gordon and Annie Goad.

Ina received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Roanoke College in 1942 and was the first female chemist employed by the State of Virginia. It was at Roanoke College that she met her husband, Richard B. Steele, and they married in 1946. Richard was a dentist in Rehoboth Beach until his death in 1975. Ina was also predeceased by a sister, Lois Goad Parrish in 1973; and a son, Vernon L. Steele in 1988.

Mrs. Steele is survived by three sons and their wives; Gerald and Ann Steele of Roanoke, Va., Wayne and Bunny Steele of Rehoboth Beach and Drew and Donna Steele of Hunt Valley, MD. She is also survived by two granddaughters; one grandson; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to raising her sons, Ina taught elementary school for almost 20 yeas in the Woodbridge and Indian River school districts before retiring in the mid 1990s. Ina continued to reside in Rehoboth until she moved to the Glebe in April 2007.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 16, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Laurel Street and King Charles Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, with visitation beginning at noon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Gull House Adult Day Center, 38140 Terrace Rd, Rehoboth Beach, DE. 19971 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 108 North Bedford St., Georgetown, DE, 19947.
