1st State Ice Theatre teams prepare for June 20-22 nationals

Teams to perform free exhibition June 9 in Harrington
Jun 04, 2013

Downstate Delaware’s 1st State Ice Theatre’s novice and adult teams are working hard to prepare for the National Theatre on Ice competition June 20-22 in Troy, Ohio. The teams train at the Centre Ice Rink in Harrington and have been working on their nationals programs since September 2012.

Theatre on Ice is a fairly new but exciting and fast-growing team discipline in figure skating, combining the athleticism and grace of the sport with the dramatic flair, storytelling qualities, props and costumes of theater. Teams compete in six levels, including novice and adult.

In Ohio, the 16-member novice team, whose members range in age from 9 to 16, will perform their long program, “Silent Movie,” inspired by old-fashioned black-and-white silent films. The five-and-a-half-minute program features cowboys, bad guys, saloon girls and even a hero and a damsel in distress. Their choreography program is a shorter Latin-flavored piece, “Libertango.”

Team members are Ashby Amory and Margaret Amory of Milford, Sequoia Bernard of Delmar, Jasmyn Breck of Bridgeville, Emily Joseph of Harrington, Olga Koch-Eilers of Easton, Md., Katherine Kotsifakis of Ocean City, Md., Sophia Layfield of Milford, Samantha Lee of Milford, Erin Moffett of Denton, Md., Makenna Mounts of Harrington, Kelly Rearic of Federalsburg, Md., Olivia Rexrode of Frederica, Mikaela Smith and Syerra Smith of Greenwood and Jecilyn Stanley of Dover.

The nine-member adult team’s long program is a unique take on Batman, featuring the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder squaring off against the notorious Catwoman and an all-female group of familiar villains. Their choreography program is the Hawaiian version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Adult team members are Jerry Santoferrara of Newark, Thomas Harrison of Millsboro and Katrina Bohn of Frederica, recent adult national medalists who also coach both 1st State Ice Theatre teams; and Karen Moffett of Denton, Md., Terry Kahline of Milford, Cindy Mullarkey of Milford, Monica Stecher of Easton, Md., Jean Watson of Georgetown, and Joanna Wilson of Dover.

Last year, 1st State Ice Theatre competed at nationals as one team in the open division, and brought home a fourth-place national medal.

Local audiences can see both teams perform both of their programs at the Bay Country Figure Skating Club’s season-closing Summer Fun exhibition at 5 p.m., Sunday, June 9, at the Center Ice Rink in Harrington. Admission is free and open to all.

Based at the Centre Ice Rink in Harrington, the Bay Country Figure Skating Club is a United States Figure Skating member club founded in 1982.  For more information go to www.baycountryfsc.org.
