302 Fitness in Milton offers cancer patients exercise to improve quality of life

Apr 21, 2014

John Lehne started off his career as a personal trainer in 2010 with the original intention to work with athletes trying to up their game, but recently he changed course when his mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Doing a job he loves while being able to help her attain the quality of life she had prior to cancer became his priority. Lehne started researching trainings, schools, and seminars before enrolling to become a cancer exercise specialist. When the books and DVDs arrived for the home study, he focused on the course and completed the CES exam. Lehne plans to attend the CES workshop and attend local seminars to continue to gain knowledge on an unfortunately growing problem.

"Becoming a CES has provided me with the knowledge to offer workouts for persons living with 25 different types of cancer and the associated unique risks with each. It has taught me how to identify, address, and prevent lymphedema through exercise. But, most importantly, it has opened my eyes to a lifestyle that some people living with cancer never thought they would have again," said Lehne.

302 Fitness, at 113 Union St., Milton, opened under the Delaware Economic Development Office's Project Pop-up program in October 2013. Since then, Lehne has added to his qualifications not only with the CES certification, but also with USA Track and Field coaching certification, and he is Action Certified. Along with new equipment in his studio, Lehne has brought instructors to hold Zumba and Zumba Sentao small-group classes. Finally, he has transitioned to chemical-free cleaners and disinfectants to reduce allergies and help the environment.

"Cancer survivors no longer have to accept the fact that they have limited range of motion, poor posture, neck and back pain, lymphedema, chronic fatigue, and other issues following their treatment. We have the answers and can help to reverse many, if not all, of the agonizing problems that chronically plague cancer survivors," Lehne said. Call 302-745-8338 or go to 302fitness.com.
