Alisha Broughton of Milton named Jefferson Award winner

While Milton resident Alisha Broughton was conducting a training session Dec. 20 at the The Family Outreach Center in Lincoln, she was surprised by WBOC Channel 16's television news anchor Lacee Griffith, who congratulated Broughton on being named a local Jefferson Award winner.

Brougton will be featured for a week on WBOC news programs starting Monday, Feb. 3. She has also been nominated as a national Jefferson Award winner.

The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. They are presented on two levels: national and local. They began in 1972 as a kind of  Nobel Prize for public service. Today, their primary purpose is to serve as a call to action for volunteers in local communities.

Broughton has volunteered more than 1,000 hours in 18 months at The Family Outreach Center in Lincoln, where she tutors children in the Milford and Cape Henlopen school districts. She leads workshops dealing with bullying, teen pregnancy, domestic violence, study habits, scholarship assistance and much more. She also volunteers at Children and Families First as a trainer. She has taught classes such as Effective Interviewing, Job Placement and How to Start a Business. She also does seminars each month which teach women and men tools for daily living.

Broughton is a 1991 graduate of Delaware State University with a BA in journalism and mass communication and a master's degree in education from Wilmington University. She is currently pursuing her PhD in organizational leadership in education and business management. She is a member of Crossroads Community Church in Georgetown.
