Around the World film series to present 'Broken' Feb. 5

Jan 20, 2014

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Lewes Public Library and Movies at Midway announce the first 2014 screening in the Around the World series of critically acclaimed, international independent films. The British family drama “Broken” will be presented at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, in the upstairs screening room at Movies at Midway. Admission to this film series is free and open to the public.

In this coming-of-age drama, 11-year-old Skunk lives a carefree life with her loving father (Tim Roth), brother, and nanny. The summer holidays have just begun, and Skunk's afternoons are full of daydreaming and wandering around her neighborhood. One day, Skunk witnesses her bitter and angry neighbor, Mr. Oswald, savagely beating Rick, a psychologically troubled boy from the neighborhood whom Mr. Oswald's daughter has callously and fictitiously accused of rape. Overwhelmed by what she has seen, Skunk tries to find solace but instead is drawn into her neighbors' unfolding melodrama. Now that she is involved in the chaos, will she be able to find a way out, or will her life remain broken? “Broken” premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, received the Golden Eye Award for best international film at the Zurich Film Festival and won Best British Independent Film at the British Independent Film Awards in 2012.
