Thoughts From the Sidelines

As Winter Olympics come to close, baseball will garner fans' attention

By Sumner Spence | Feb 20, 2014

This week's Winter Olympic action has been fun to watch. The U.S. men's hockey team's performances have been a great surprise. In the preliminary round they won all three of their games, including a great win against the home country, Russia. In that game there was a shoot out that lasted eight rounds! The U.S. actually has a good chance to win the gold. I will certainly be following the close of this event.

I am not usually a fan of ice-dancing but it was cool to see an American team finally win the gold medal in the event. This event has traditionally been dominated by European teams even though a lot of them train in the U.S. The talent pool was very deep and every performance was pretty darn spectacular. This was refreshing after the disappointing men's figure skating competition where almost all of the competitors had falls and slip-ups in their performances. The jumps and spins have hit a difficulty level that is taking away from the rest of their individual performances. This year's Olympic event will leave the judges and officials having to look at their sport and see what should or could be done to preserve its integrity.

There isn't much to report from baseball spring training until there are actually some games being played. Right now it's all about drills and skills and who can start the season injury free.

The college and high school basketball season is in the home stretch for this year. The University of Delaware men's basketball team has pulled off 13 consecutive conference wins. This gives them a good chance of being selected for March Madness. If it happens, it will be the first time in more than 10 years.
