Thoughts From the Sidelines

Be thankful for all our freedoms!

By Sumner Spence | May 23, 2013

My hopes for a Triple Crown have been dashed. I was hoping that Orb would at least finish in the money at the Preakness but he did not. The winner of the race, Oxbow, didn't even run in the Derby but he won in Baltimore soundly and it will be fun to watch both Orb and Oxbow in the Belmont in a few weeks. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed won 35 years ago!

In baseball it seems the odds of the Phillies being able to have any sweeps in any series continues to be a long shot. They have been incredibly inconsistent with their hitting and relief pitching. I was at the game last Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds where the Phillies were able to hit back-to-back home runs to walk off with the win in the bottom of the ninth inning. I believe that is the first time they've done that since 1922! Even with all of the positives of that win, of course there negatives. Carlos Ruiz strained his hamstring running to third base in that game and he will now be out at least a month. I predict it will be longer than that due to the fact that the stress on his legs with being a catcher could delay his return.

I want to mention something in the soccer world that I brought up a few weeks ago. The Champions League final game will take place this weekend. There is actually some history to be made for the first time ever, in that both teams are from Germany. Bayern Munich will be playing against Borussia Dortmund. It should be a great game! The other less significant story in the soccer world is the retirement of David Beckham, who is perhaps the most famous soccer player in the last 10 years. He spent most of his 20-year career playing for the English club, Manchester United. When he was a younger player he was known for his talent for taking amazing free kicks which led to him scoring many goals. He also played for the LA Galaxy in the MLS for five or so years. Retiring from soccer will not be the end of his notoriety. His modeling career is celebrated as well.

Memorial Day weekend is always the close of the lacrosse season. This has been another good year for Cape girls and boys. We will know our winners by the close of the weekend both in high school lacrosse and college lacrosse. The Cape Henlopen girls are in the hunt for their fifth straight championship! In Division I college lacrosse, Syracuse actually has a chance for both the men's and women's teams to end up on the top. That would be a first in college lacrosse. I am majorly invested in this as I have two cousins who play on the women's team and I will get to see them play on Friday night at Villanova. They have a tough game to win against Maryland. It's going to be a great sports weekend no matter what.
