Beach Desks, a Rehoboth Beach CoWorking space, will host a kickoff event at 6 p.m., Friday, July 25.  The public is invited to visit the new coworking office space at the Bay Vista Business center, at the intersection of Route 1 and Bay Vista Road in Rehoboth Beach. Beach Desks offers on-demand desk space where independent workers can work side by side in a professional work environment. The space is run by local residents Phil Hagen and Micah Sklut, who grew tired of the drawbacks of working from their home offices and coffee shops.  Instead, they wanted to spend the workday in a collaborative environment with other motivated professionals.

Coworking is a relatively new concept that provides a flexible change of scenery for home-based and independent workers.  While some find the freedom of working from home a great benefit, others may find it isolating or even distracting.  Sklut, founder of Swellinfo.com, a nationwide surf forecasting web site, said “There are many benefits to a coworking space, but I really find it helpful to separate my work and home environments.  While at Beach Desks, I can focus on work.  When I get home, I try to leave the laptop packed away.  I feel more balanced this way, rather than feeling like I’m always on the job.”

Hagen, CEO of Red Canary, an information security startup that provides managed threat detection services, agrees.  “I worked from home for years.  It was easy to get distracted during the day, and I found myself back at the keyboard at night to make up for the lost productivity.  I also found that I missed some level of interaction that you typically get in an office environment.  However, since coworkers come from different backgrounds, the discussions are helpful and interesting - not the typical work banter.”

Beach Desks offers on-demand pricing, which means members only pay for the time they need, without the burden of a dedicated lease.  Memberships are as low as $20 per day or $325 per month.  The bright, open space can comfortably host seven to eight people in its current configuration.  Each member has access to a desk, a coffee house-style area, a conference room, and all the expected office comforts.  Members tend to be small business owners, remote employees, and people vacationing at the Delaware beaches who need some dedicated time to keep their day jobs in check.

To see Beach Desks in person and learn more about this coworking space, stop by the kickoff event at 6 p.m., Friday, July 25.  Drinks and lite fare will be provided.  Beach Desks is at 20245 Bay Vista Road, Suite 306, Rehoboth Beach (next to the Grotto corporate office).  More information and detailed directions are available at BeachDesks.com.
