Beacon and Mariner meet on diamonds at CHHS

The Beacon and Mariner middle schools met in their annual baseball and softball rivalry at Cape Henlopen High School April 10. When the dust cleared, Mariner took softball honors 8-7 while Beacon had a 12-8 baseball win.

Mariner pitcher Hannah Betts went the distance for the Mariner Lady Vikings, striking out seven and walking only two. Jordyn Virden pitched six innings for the Beacon Vikings, striking out eight Mariner batters.

The Mariner girls were down 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Kaeli O'Neill drove in Madison Shatzer to tie it at seven. Kaela Saez then drove in O'Neill to win the game.

Beacon's Destiny Thompson went 3-for-4 at the plate with two triples; Jordyn Virden went 3-for-4 and Shannon Lord went 2-for-4.

With the Mariner boys up 8-4 after three innings, Beacon rallied to take a 12-8 victory. Beacon's Will Geppert had a triple in the win while pitcher David Erickson was credited with the victory in relief of Zack Gelof.

Mariner's Noah Piper slugged a two-RBI double while Jake Siranides was 1-for-1 with three walks.
