Lewes — The Beacon Middle School baseball team took a big step closer to an undefeated season May 12, when the Vikings took down previously undefeated Smyrna 10-3 at home.

Beacon capitalized on a wild Smyrna pitcher to rally for seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Eagles. Several wild pitches and passed balls advanced Beacon runners into scoring position and even allowed some runners to score.

But Beacon was not without its power at the plate. Zach Dale collected three RBIs in a 1-for-4 afternoon, while Zack Gelof notched two hits and an RBI, and Sam Johnson knocked in two runners.

Johnson got the start on the mound, and after a shaky start that saw Smyrna take a two-run lead in the second inning, he settled down and pitched a solid four innings.

Gelof relived Johnson to open the fifth inning and recorded the final nine outs allowing just one run and striking out four batters.

Smyrna entered the game with a 7-0 record, having beaten every team by at least three runs. They had scored nine or more runs in five of seven games.

Beacon has had some closer contests, beating Selbyville and Sussex Academy by a single run each.

Beacon faced off with district rival Mariner May 14. The team will close out its season Friday, May 16, at Millsboro Middle School.
