Bicyclist charged after crashing into police car

By Melissa Steele | Jul 10, 2013

A bicyclist faces bicycling while under the influence of alcohol and other charges after police say he crashed into a police trooper patrolling Route 1.

A Delaware State Police trooper was driving northbound at 1:30 a.m. near Josephine Street in the area known as the "forgotten mile" when the trooper saw a bicyclist weaving in and out of traffic while texting, said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

The trooper stopped on the right shoulder ahead of the bicyclist and activated his lights, Fournier said. He got out of his 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe and walked to the rear of the vehicle to speak to the bicyclist. The trooper told the bicyclist to stop, but the bicyclist rode past the trooper and crashed into the back of the Tahoe, Fournier said.

The rider flew off the bike into the roadway where the trooper assisted him to the curb; the bicyclist was uninjured, Fournier said.

During an interview, police said they detected the smell of alcohol.

Police charged Huseyin Engin Uysal, 22, of Rehoboth Beach with bicycling while under the influence of alcohol, failure to remain in a single lane and bicycle not equipped with a light. He was released on his own recognizance.
