The Cape soccer system of coach Gary Montalto produced a 2-1 nail-biting victory at Sussex Central Sept. 17, but not finishing on good chances continued to plague Cape in the early season.

The Vikings were cruising, leading 1-0 on a goal by defender Joe McMillon at 12:00 minutes in on a pass/shot from Billy Swontek off a short corner.

“Conor [Donohoe] and I alternate going up on corners; he took the first one, so I went up on the second one,” Joe said. "Billy [Swontek] played it through and I just got a touch on it.”

Cape committed to what players call “the system,” controlling field position but had trouble finding the back of the net. A sudden stealth strike off the foot of Perfecto Perez from way out front curved high then dropped in the upper corner to goalie Griffin Kammerer’s right, and the game was knotted at halftime 1-1.

“I feel I should have had it,” said Kammerer. “I just couldn’t reach it.”

A cool 12 minutes into the second half, “boxcars rolling dice” Zach Swarbrick headed a corner cross from Billy Swontek past goaltender Bryan Perez Castillo for what proved to be the game-winner.

“I could read Billy’s eyes,” Zach said. “He just makes plays the entire game. There was pressure near the end defending our one-goal lead but I thought we handled it well.”

Montalto addressed all facets of the game with his team, from the problem finding the back of the net to the importance of being a reserve on the bench. “I’m looking for combinations to make the team better; your job is to play and practice hard; we all want the same result,” he said.

Cape was set to play an intense soccer rivalry game at Sussex Tech Thursday, Sept. 19.

Cape tied the Ravens 1-1 in 2012. The Ravens won 2-1 in 2011 with Cape winning 1-0 in 2010.
