Brad Connor, a well-known local businessman and current mayor of Dagsboro, filed March 5 as a candidate for the District 5 seat on Sussex County Council. He has two decades of public service to Sussex County including president of the Sussex County Association of Towns, vice president of the Delaware League of Local Governments and president of the Southern Sussex County Rotary Club in Selbyville.

Connor stated, “I have decided to run for the Sussex County Council, because I am very concerned about the lack of good-paying jobs in the county. I believe that the county should try to provide a business-friendly atmosphere and work with potential employers to attract and establish more higher-paying technical jobs for our sons and daughters when they graduate from tech training or from college. Right now, the county does not have a viable business plan, and the existing county Office of Economic Development is not currently staffed.”

Connor has been meeting with residents outside of the small towns in the unincorporated areas of his district and is concerned about the length of time it takes for the state police to respond to 9-1-1 calls in these areas.

“Folks are telling me that they question where the police are stationed and where they are being dispatched from. I believe the county needs to investigate these concerns and work with and provide sufficient resources to the state police to ensure that there is adequate and timely police protection for our citizens," he said.

Broadband internet access is not available to residents in these rural areas. If elected, he will explore ways to enhance the current service.

In the coming months, Connor will continue to meet with the residents in his district and begin to work with representatives of the organizations he has served on in Sussex County to develop a platform, and plans to address these and other issues. He said, “I will be an active councilmember. When I am elected, I will use the skills I have developed in public office over the years to resolve these issues and others that I expect to hear about on the campaign trail.”

Connor is shown filing paperwork for the election, surrounded by some of his supporters.

The fifth district is currently represented by Vance Phillips, a Republican. Connor is a Democrat.
