Initiating the 2013 summer season with two appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog, Browseabout Books established this year’s equation for upbeat events: Children plus their favorite book characters plus story time and creative crafts equals a summer full of fun for everyone involved.

Dozens of children gathered in Browseabout’s event room for the 9 a.m. appearances of Clifford on Saturday and Sunday over Memorial Day weekend.

After every child was greeted, storyteller Nichole Zechman read “Clifford’s Birthday Party” to members of a rapt audience, who were then invited to create a craft about Clifford.

Browseabout Books at 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, will be hosting six more characters throughout the summer. All events start promptly at 9 a.m.: June 22-23, "Curious George;" July 6-7, "Ladybug Girl;" July 20-21, "Bad Kitty;" Aug. 3-4, "Llama Llama;" Aug. 17-18, "Pete the Cat;" and Aug. 31-Sept. 1, "Junie B. Jones."
