Calvary Assembly of God to present holiday show Dec. 11-15

Nov 20, 2013

The Creative Arts Ministry of Calvary Assembly of God, Dover, announces that this year’s holiday production will be “Mary & Joseph: The Miraculous Journey,” to be performed at 7 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday, Dec. 11 to 15, plus a 10:30 a.m. performance Sunday, Dec. 15, in Calvary’s state-of-the-art sanctuary/theater, 1141 E. Lebanon Road, Route 10 and S. State Street, Dover.

Directed by Dee Gleason and Terence Savagel, this brand-new, original musical drama was created by Calvary’s Creative Team and offers audiences a unique perspective on the Christmas story by telling it through the eyes of Jesus’ earthly family.

“We wanted to do something different, and we thought, what if we told the story through Joseph’s eyes?” said Executive Producer Angela Coon. “We don’t usually get his perspective, and it takes us inside the story in a new way.”

Set entirely in Biblical times, the story begins with Mary’s betrothal to Joseph the carpenter, and offers a rare look at the young couple, their families, their community and the world in which they lived. Mary is visited by the angel Gabriel and told she will miraculously be the mother of Jesus - but what will her family, her husband-to-be and their community believe? Will she be accepted -or rejected and stoned?

As Mary and Joseph answer these questions, accept their calling and embark on their journey of faith and trust, the production also promises intriguing glimpses into the backstory of the Magi and of King Herod and his motivations.

To help tell the story, Savagel wrote four original songs and made special arrangements to combine his original pieces with unique arrangements of familiar music from “Ave Maria” to “The Prayer,” giving the show a Broadway-like feel. Robin Lear and her team also designed and constructed new sets.

“This script came together so fast, it was a miracle in itself,” Gleason said. “And it’s an amazing show,” Savagel added.

Admission is free and open to all, no reserved seating. Doors open one hour before performances; nursery is available.
