A team of 13 CAMP Rehoboth Volunteer on Vacation volunteers turned out Aug. 3 to participate in Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's first Veterans Build.

Volunteers gathered at the Georgetown site for introductions, then the VOV team got to work. The front porch railing was assembled, and the house numbers were hung. Volunteers also mixed and spread mortar, screwed down floorboards and helped with painting and general cleanup.  Volunteers learned from AmeriCorps Site Manager Lara Joyce, who provided instruction.

The best part of the day was getting to meet Mari Ellyn Hellard, a disabled U.S. Air Force veteran. A dedication is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 11, and soon thereafter, Hellard and her two sons will move into their new home.

First-time VOV volunteer Deby Daly said, “ I had a blast!” and Eddy Caldwell added, "I had such a good time. Definitely planning on doing it again.”

Volunteer on Vacation will once again partner with Habitat for Humanity Saturday, Sept. 14, this time for A Brush with Kindness, where the crew will renovate the home of a local family or person in need. The day begins at 8:45 a.m. and will run until approximately 3 p.m.

Volunteer on Vacation offers community service opportunities to residents and vacationers. It unites individuals and groups in creating a better community, and is a continuation of the work done by CAMP Rehoboth. To join the VOV team or learn more, contact leslie.sinclair@hotmail.com.

Please don't forget that you can also donate $25, $50 or more to sponsor an American flag in memory of a  Hero to be displayed on September 11 at the build site. There is a form in Friday 8/23 Cape Gazette and in this coming Friday Cape Gazette 8/30. For any further info., please contact Jen Scott at (302) 245-2316. And I'd like to congratulate and thank Mari Ellen Hellard for her service, and also the wonderful volunteers who make this possible.

God Bless America!
