The Cape Henlopen girls' basketball team can play well at times, just not for a long time. With natural light giving the new school an old school feeling Jan. 19, Cape stuck close to the visiting Padua Pandas, in fact won the first and fourth quarters, each by a single point, at 18-17 and 15-14.  Rocking playground parlance, the Vikings “got blowed out” in the middle periods 32-13, losing the game 63-46.

The Vikings have dropped off the table after a four-year run of postseason play including a state final in 2011 and now sit at 1-9 on the season.

During the 2010 to 2012 seasons coached by Lamont Hazzard and Will Edwards with players like Johnesha Warren, Meg Bartley,Taylor Harris and Jacki Coveleski and in 2012 with Aaliyah Davis, Cape was a combined 44-15 in the regular season and 7-3 in post season play. In 2011, Cape upset Ursuline to reach the finals for the first time in 37 years and in 2010 beat undefeated Saint Mark’s to reach the semifinals.

A lot of explanations are up for discussion, but “the coaches suddenly went stupid” seems more like scapegoating than reality.

Cape was paced in the loss by the relentless beast on the inside, Kadijah Doughty with 17 points and freshman transfer Madi Smith with 14 points. “I just love it here, ” said Smith, who moved to Lewes with her mom and dad and four younger siblings. “I came from Downingtown East in Pennsylvania."  She played soccer and lacrosse at Downingtown (opposite seasons in Pennsylvania) but plans to play lacrosse this spring.

Cape will play next at Polytech at 5:15 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Padua was paced in scoring by Emily Thiemann with 16, Rachel Liszkiewicz 14 and Teresa Highberger 9. Padua, a disciplined but young squad, improved to 5-5 on the season.
