The Cape boys' lacrosse team played a crucial game May 10 at at Tower Hill, and those fans who really cared were there while other fans back at Cape watching the Cape girls play Tower Hill were ring-a-dinged with text updates.

The Hillers jumped on Cape 5-0 just six minutes into the game as digital depression settled into the Vikings fan base. Coming on the heels of an overtime Senior Night giveaway game to Caesar Rodney for the Henlopen Conference championships May 7, Cape’s quest for a second seed in the state tournament looked bleaker than a black sky at daybreak.

“The kids hung in there. We got a stop and a goal and a comeback to be proud of,“ Cape’s Jack Lingo said of the game as Cape scored seven unanswered goals over 29 minutes for a brief 7-5 third-quarter lead. But the Hillers responded with two goals, knotting the game at 7 heading into the final period.

The Keen and Kane show delivered for Cape in the fourth quarter, giving Cape a crazy 9-7 victory and energizing the fan base downstate, most of whom had switched to vibrate, which is easier to sense when watching a different game.

Cape scoring came from Todd Keen 4, Matt Kane 3, and Blake Mann and Michael Hopkins.

Luke Benson and Matt Kane each had 2 assists while Mann had 1.

Tony Iammatteo had 9 saves for the Vikings. The shots were dead even at 27 each.

Tower Hill scores came from Andrew Petit 3, Ben Watson, Bill Mette, Brett Hinckley and Sam Murphy. Goalie Devin Shorey had 15 saves for the Hillers.

Cape, 11-4, was awarded the second seed in the 16-team state tournament and will open play at Legends Stadium Tuesday, May 17, hosting the Charter Force at 7 p.m.

The winner will play the winner of the Archmere at Dover game Saturday, May 18.
