Cape elementary students deserve better
On April 2, residents of the Cape Henlopen School District will be asked to vote on whether to raise their taxes to build an additional elementary school and additional classrooms. After reviewing all of the information presented by school district officials, I am urging my fellow residents to vote yes!
The need for an additional elementary school and additional classroom space is obvious. We have seen a 12 percent growth in the number of students attending our schools in the last five years. Our kids are being taught in modular buildings and spare space (former locker rooms, storage space, etc.). This is not conducive to teaching or learning.
The cost of building the new school and classrooms to those of us who are taxpayers is actually minimal - $5 more a month on our property tax bills. Is this really too much to spend to ensure that our kids attend schools that are not overcrowded? I don’t believe so. Let’s not turn our backs on our kids as we did five years ago when we failed to pass the technology referendum. Join me in supporting the referendum April 2. Our kids and grandkids will thank you.
