Coach P.J. Kesmodel knows women’s lacrosse, and he knows his players, but if he only draws two in a game of poker, don’t try to read his strategy.

Cape lost prolific prime-time players Sara Young and Anna Frederick to graduation, but this 2014 team is completely different. In the last two home wins versus Caesar Rodney 22-1 and Dover 22-2, Cape has looked great but mostly reconfigured.

Led by senior captains Allie Yeager and Kat Judge, the Vikings still get firepower from underclassmen with 32 of the 44 goals scored over the last two games. Midfielders Amanda Smith and Riley Wagner have moved to defense. Freshman Cailey Thornburg  has moved onto the midfield with Judge and Karalyn Joseph backed by a sophomore midfield of Lizzie Frederick, Alison Palmer and Tess Bernheimer.

“We are waiting for Lexi [Woodruff], bothered by hamstring tenderness, to get back full speed because she’s our creator on attack," Kesmodel said. “We have people who can finish.”

Cape was led against Dover by a quick defense fronting goalie Sam Broadhurst and a scoring eruption from Jordan Brown with 5,  Yeager and Sarah Tappan with 3, and  Karalyn Joseph, Palmer and Cam Wick with 2 each.  Single goals came from Thornburg, Bernheimer and Frederick.

Cape will play at unbeaten Archmere at noon, Saturday, April 5. The Auks are coming off a double-overtime 13-12 home win over Sussex Tech.
