The Polytech Panthers are a totally insane basketball team. They are long and springy, usually own the glass, and play a physical style.  The Panther is the cat you don’t have in the bag until the scorebook has left the table and the lights begin to flicker.

At Polytech’s Senior Night Feb. 15, Cape put some distance between itself and the Panthers squad, leading 40-29 with 3:38 left to play, but a frantic Polytech run saw the lead shrink to 53-52 with 46 seconds left to play.

“We couldn’t have executed much worse on offense, but defensively we held them down," coach Steve Re said after the Cape team hung on by its nails for a 57-54 victory.

The Vikings finished the season 12-8, having won five of their last six ball games.

"This game may sum up the season, but it also sums up our growth," Re said. "We kept our focus in this game, which was good enough to win it.  This was a perfect game for us going into the playoffs, a team that’s bigger than us, more physical and they probably outrebounded us double. I think the tough schedule and adversity have paid off, which is why we schedule the way we do. The goal of the entire season is to be tournament ready, and we feel that we are.”

Cape’s scoring leaders were Jon Warren with 23 and Tyreik Burton with 20.

The tournament bracket should be released Saturday, Feb. 22.

Notes: Polytech started five seniors and trailed at the end of one period 18-8.  They also had two players receive technical fouls, which cost them four points and two possessions.
