The Cape girls' basketball team fell behind quickly and could not recover as St. Mark's dropped the Vikings to 3-8 on the season with a 49-18 loss at the Vikings gymnasium.

St. Mark's came out firing on all cylinders as they hit three three-pointers in the first three minutes and jumped to a 17-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The halftime break brought more scoring misery for the Lady Vikings as they went into the locker room down 30-6.

"St. Mark's is a very well coached team," said senior Ellie Sutton. "Their fast-paced ball movement and explosiveness toward the basket made the game tough to keep competitive."

The scoring drought continued for the Vikings in the third quarter as they could only muster a single foul shot, taking St. Marks' lead to 39-7.

The fourth quarter found the Vikings outscoring the Spartans 11-10, but it was too little, too late as the Spartans moved their record to 6-4 on the season with the victory.

"As of right now, the Lady Vikings are focusing on what we can do individually to make the team better, and coach [Lamont] Hazzard will put the pieces together," Sutton said. "'All as one,' as coach Will [Edwards] would say."

St. Mark's junior Claire Igo scored 13 points to lead the Spartans.

The Vikings travel to Smyrna Tuesday, Jan. 21, for a matchup with the 6-3 Eagles.
