Cape’s senior captains Anna Frederick and Sara Young have been in nine one-goal games since they started for the Cape girls' lacrosse team as freshmen. The team’s record in those games is 9-0.

Cape closed out a crazy come-from-behind 9-8 victory over visiting Holy Cross Academy of Kensington, Md., March 23, with the duo of Frederick and Young combining for all nine goals.

The game came down to Holy Cross with a straight-on free possession opportunity with 10 seconds remaining, trailing 9-8.

The shot was seen and eaten alive by goalie Samantha Broadhurst to preserve the victory.

“I was thinking I’d rather die than let that ball get by me,” said the smiling sophomore, who had 12 saves in her first varsity start.

Young was asked if she felt nervousness or trepidation staring a loss in the face. Young said, ”I just feel rage; no way I want anyone beating us.” Frederick was calmer. ”I don’t get nervous; I just figure Coach P.J. will figure out a way for us to win.”

Cape jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first half with 6:16 left to play on three goals by Frederick and one by Young,  but the Tartans ran off three quick goals to lead at halftime 5-4.

“We did not play well in the first half.  We just kept dropping the ball and making bad passes," said coach P.J. Kesmodel. “They’re a good team, but we were creating a lot of our own problems.”

The Tartans scored first in the second half to lead 6-4, but goals by Frederick and Young tied the game at 6 with 20 minutes left to play.

“A huge factor in our winning was Taylor Gooch on defense, who had about seven clears just by herself,” Kesmodel said. “And she makes good passes and good decisions getting rid of the ball."

Frederick and Young traded goals with Holy Cross, and with the game tied at 8 with two minutes remaining, Young scored on a free position for a 9-8 Cape advantage, setting up the dramatic save by Sam Broadhurst.

Cape defense, all first-year starters, limited Holy Cross to just three goals in the second half. "Coryn Cannon, Maggie Delp, Lindsay Voss and Taylor Gooch are very athletic," said Kesmodel.

Cape will host the 2-0 Ursuline Raiders at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 26.  The junior varsity will play at 5:30.

Notes: Coach Lauren Berg of Ursuline is trying to bring awareness of breast cancer to girls across the state. Ursuline and Cape are planning on forming a pink ribbon on the field as a sign, according to Berg, that, “We are all in this fight together.” Both teams will be wearing pink shirts that read, "Drawing attention to breast cancer - one 'check' at a time." There will be a mini bake sale of pink goodies and a donation box available - all money goes to Susan G. Komen research. All fans are encouraged to wear pink that day in support of the teams' effort and of breast cancer awareness.
