The Cape girls' lacrosse team doubled down Tower Hill 14-7 May 9 on the fast pitch of Richardson Field in front of a diverse crowd, most cheering on the Hillers' every goal.

Then-undefeated Charter (which lost May 10 to Polytech) caught the attention of Cape as they cheered the opposition.  "That’s what I would do," Allie Yeager said with a smile after the game. "Players root for the underdog just like fans; it makes perfect sense to me.”

Cape went to the front early, but the Hillers came back to tie the game at 2  and later trailed 4-3 before the Vikings got it going to lead 8-4 at halftime.

"We put ourselves in a position with five out-of-state losses, all close games. We just can’t lose another," said Coach P.J. Kesmodel after the game. "We doubled down a pretty good lacrosse team in spite of having 18 turnovers. But we played hard and we played a lot of people.”

Cape was led in scoring by Sarah Tappan with 4, Kat Judge 3, Jordan Brown 2, Lexi Woodruff 1, Tess Bernheimer 1, Alison Palmer 1 and Cailey Thornburg 1.

Cape assists were Yeager with 2, Tappan 2, Woodruff 2 and Joseph 2.

The Hillers were paced by Emma Lynch with 2, Sawyer Chilton 1, Madeline Schwartz 1, Abigail  Manning 1, Kiva Walsh 1 and Gretchen Zungalia 1.

Assists were by Chilton1, Lynch 1 and Walsh 1 .

Cape outshot Tower Hill 19-17.

Sam Broadhurst had 10 saves for Cape while Michelle Amorison had 5 for the Hillers.

Cape, 10-5,  will close out the regular season at Ursuline at 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, May 14.

The first round of the eight-team state tournament begins Saturday, May 17. The top four teams get a home game in the first round. The brackets will be announced Wednesday night, May 14. Cape had won 15 straight state tournament games on the way to five straight state titles.
