Cape golf scores another win

By Fritz Schrank | Apr 18, 2011

The Cape Henlopen High School varsity golf team won another away match April 6, defeating Polytech High School’s Ravens 184-208 at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Course near Magnolia.

The winning score totaled several strokes higher than the Vikings’ previous team matches this season. Head coach Dave Inglis gave an explanation that made sense.

“On the same day we played at Jonathan’s, the greens had been aerated and then top-dressed with sand.

I played a few holes with their coach during the match, and I had a putt bounce dead sideways on me.”

Despite the course conditions, Cape’s Devin Medd won medalist honors with his three-over-par 39.

Shane Ghigliotty’s 43 was good for second place for the Vikings, as well as in the overall results. James Fenstermaker shot a 50 for third best among the Vikings, while Nick Purnell completed the team scoring with his 52.

The Vikings were scheduled to play Seaford High School April 8 at Heritage Shores Golf Course near Bridgeville, but were rained out.

The match was postponed. The squad lost another away match 196-189 April 12 to Sussex Tech’s team at The Peninsula near Millsboro.

The team returned April 13 to Rehoboth Beach Country Club for a 181-240 win over Laurel. Details to come.

More charity golf opportunities
The 19th Annual YMCA Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, May 9 at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The popular event benefits the Strong Kids Campaign, which provides financial assistance to children needing help to be able to participate in the Sussex Family YMCA’s programs.

The scramble format tournament begins with a lunch starting at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start out on the course. Dinner follows thereafter at the clubhouse, and an auction will be held.

This year’s lead sponsors are Atlantic Homes and Nickle Electrical Companies. Other sponsors include Rehoboth CC, Schab and Barnett P.A., WSFS Bank, and The Light House of Lewes.

Both playing and sponsorship opportunities remain, including sign recognition. Players can register either singly or in groups of up to four. For more information, phone the YMCA at 302-296-9622.

The Long Neck Sunrise Rotary Club is holding its second annual golf charity event Thursday, May 19, at The Peninsula golf course near Millsboro. The tournament beneficiaries are the Delaware Children’s Burn Camp and End Polio Now Worldwide.

On-site registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon.

A box lunch will be served to each golf cart. Cocktails and dinner follow at 5 p.m., including an auction, a 50/50 drawing, and door prizes.

The tournament fee is $150 per golfer, or $600 per foursome. Several tournament sponsorship opportunities remain.

Recreating a bit of Masters magic?

Thus far I have not been able to arrange my schedule to see The Masters Tournament in person, but several folks I know have gone to Augusta for the annual rite of spring.

Among those folks, however, only one of them to my knowledge has tried to recreate one of the classic dining options available during the event for its thousands of patrons.

Jim and Lisa Hutchins of Milford and The Poconos attended several Masters tournaments in past years, but didn’t go this year. Instead, Jim decided to make a batch of Augusta National’s famous pimento cheese sandwiches for several of their golfing friends and acquaintances. Jim said he conducted several experiments over the years to perfect his version of this alleged white-bread delight.

Jim and Lisa handed out the sandwiches as we prepared to play in the season-opening tournament at Shawnee Country Club, held by tradition on Masters Sunday.

I really appreciated the gesture. If Jim’s attempt was a completely accurate recreation, however, I can safely say that I won’t be going to the Masters Tournament for the food any time soon.

See you next week here or out on the greens.
