The Cape field hockey team survived two drama-filled games over three days coming back from a 1-0 halftime deficit Sept. 26 at Dover to beat the Senators 2-1, then playing through overtime against Severna Park of Maryland and settling for a 2-2 tie.

Both games were highly entertaining for spectators, but coaches are not in the entertainment business.

“We should be scoring goals when we dominate shots and corners and should not put ourselves in positions where we can lose games we controlled," said coach Kate Windett.

The combination of two games had a stat line that said Cape had a 57-7 shots advantage and a 38-3 advantage in corners.

Cape came back from the brink at Dover on a goal off a corner by Sam Broadhurst off a Tiara Duffy assist  with 12:32 left to play in the game. Tess Bernheimer stuck in the game-winner with 4:46 remaining.

On Sept. 28, Cape led Severna Park 1-0 at halftime on an Allie Yeager goal off an assist from Duffy.

The Falcons were quickly on the board at 28:49 of the second half on a sweet corner shot by Jessica Valvano from Olivia Reiter.

Cape went ahead late as Allie Yeager scored her second goal on an assist from Kat Judge, but the Falcons tied the game two minutes later on another corner as Eva Klaus sent home a goal on a pass from Lauren Duvall. Falcons goalie Liz Mata was credited with 19 saves on the game.

Cape plays at Delmar at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The Wildcats, who return their entire team from last year including Player of the Year Booter Ellis, are 42-4 going back two seasons, all four losses to Cape including two in the state championship game.
