The semifinals of the DIAA state field hockey tournament are all about handling pressure. The Cape field hockey team responded to being down a goal at halftime to a fast blue-collar Caravel squad by cranking up the assault dial in the second half and getting even on a goal by Sara Young at 35:16, her first of the season, and adding the 2-1 game winner from freshman Tess Bernheimer at 54:04. Tess had come into the game to give her older sister Cameron a rest.

“I just got a pass from Kat [Judge] and sent it toward the net,” Tess said after the game. “I helped a great team get to the finals but I’m just realizing the shot went in.”

Cape outshot the Bucs 17-3 and had a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Katie Kolobielski had two great first-half saves, but a rebounded shot off a corner was knocked home by Jessica Reynolds to give Caravel the lead at halftime.

Sam Lester, the Caravel goalie, had 15 saves in the game. Kolobielski had 2 saves, both in the first half.

Cape will play Delmar at Milford at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, for the state championship. The Wildcats beat Polytech 3-1 in the other semifinal game.
