Cape basketball coach Steve Re should get six graduate credits in group psychology at the end of the season for keeping his team above .500 and staying on pace to make the postseason.

Cape won a big home game against Dover Feb. 6, 58-53, after falling behind 9-0 to start and 13-6 at the quarter. Cape turned it on the last three quarters by making big plays when needed, led by surging Toney Floyd, who had 19 points off the bench.

The win was the first over Dover since Jon Warren and Tyreik Burton entered high school. A seven-game losing streak to the Senators was snapped.

Cape rode all that positive energy to Sanford Feb. 8 and led 21-13 early in the second quarter, but an 8-point cushion turned into a 76-55 loss three periods later, a 29-point turnaround.

“We have to play intensely and with urgency to be effective," Re said. “I am at a loss at times to explain how our entire team personality can turn in the same game."

Adding to Floyd's 19 points in the Dover game were Tyreik Burton with 13 and Solomon Cox and Jon Warren each with 9.

The Sanford scoring included Burton with 20, Warren with 11 and Floyd with 10.

Cape will host Smyrna, 7-8, Wednesday, Feb. 12; Sussex Tech, 13-4, Friday, Feb. 15, and travel to 4-12 Polytech Tuesday, Feb. 18.

The Vikings will need to win two of three to finish above .500. A home win against archrival Sussex Tech would knock the Ravens out of a tie for the lead in the Henlopen North with Caesar Rodney.

Cape’s junior varsity is 11-3.
