Cape lacrosse girls go Spread Red, beat visiting Archmere 14-1Broadhurst has stellar day in goal cage
The Cape girls' lacrosse team powered up and throttled down, beating visiting Archmere 14-1 April 6 to go 3-0 on the young season while the visiting Auks dropped to 2-1.
The win was the 50th in a row for Cape against Delaware competition going back to the 2009 regular season in which the Vikings lost two one-goal games to St. Andrew's before beating the Cardinals in the state championship game.
“I think we have a pretty good team this year; I don’t know if the rest of the state thinks so or not,” coach P.J. Kesmodel said after the game. "I know we need more practice time; we don’t even have half the stuff in we need to cover.”
Cape scored in the first minutes of the game on a Lizzie Frederick goal off a perfect feed from Jordan Brown. Cape had four goals on the board before Archmere solved the riddle of Sam Broadhurst on a goal by Alissa Salvitti. That would be the last goal Broadhurst would allow as the sophomore was locked in, stopping 12 shots, half of them the unobstructed eight-meter free position opportunities.
Leigh Henjes had seven saves for the Auks.
“Sam was locked in and played really well and so did Karalyn Joseph on the second midfield line,” Kesmodel said. “She [Joseph] is getting really good at winning the draw and getting to the goal finding the open person. She had two really nice assists in the game.“
Kesmodel added, “Archmere is a tournament team. They have strong, in-shape players and some really good ones. They are capable of giving anyone trouble on their schedule." The Auks have already beaten St. Andrew's this season 10-8. The Saints have been in the state final game three of the last four years.
Cape led the game 8-1 at halftime and put 29 shots on net for the game while Archmere had 17 shots.
Leading the way for Cape were Anna Frederick and Allie Yeager each with 3, Sara Young and Sarah Tappan 2, and single goals from Lizzie Frederick, Kat Judge, Lexi Woodruff and Riley Wagner .
Karalyn Joseph had 2 assists followed by Sara Young, Jordan Brown and Lexi Woodruff each with 1.
Cape will host the Spartans of Saint Mark’s at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, on the turf of Champions Stadium.
Notes - Cape won the junior varsity game 13-1 on goals by Sophie Kalb 4, Morgan Catts 2 and single goals from Rachel Carey, Juliet Kenton, Peyton Medd, Dahlyn Sugrue, Tess Bernheimer, Alison Palmer and Cameron Wick.
Emma Holland got the win in goal.
