Cape May-Lewes Ferry offers package to Wildwood Aviation Museum

Nov 22, 2012

Through the end of March, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is offering a vehicle package to touch aviation history for a day. The Naval Air Station in Cape May County, renovated and restored to look and feel as it did years ago, is bringing to life an important chapter in south Jersey’s history.

“We’re proud to partner with the museum to offer this great day trip opportunity,” said Michael Porch, marketing manager for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. “The museum offers an ever-growing collection of fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter and aviation-related artifacts that make it a must-see attraction.”

The museum is one of the few remaining World War II-era wooden truss hangars in the United States. “Unlike other museums, we encourage our visitors to be hands-on as they explore aviation history,” said Dr. Joseph Salvatore, the aviation museum’s director. “We feature great education activities for the entire family, so bring the kids and don’t forget your camera!”

Commissioned in April 1943, NAS Wildwood served as an active dive-bomber squadron training facility during World War II. Today, Hangar 1 has been restored and transformed into an aviation museum that houses a number of aircraft, engines, special exhibits and educational interactive displays.

The package is available Monday through Friday until March 31. The ferry departs Lewes for Cape May at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m., and customers may return to Lewes on any afternoon departure. Advance reservations are required. The all-inclusive price for one vehicle and driver is $50.50. The price for an additional passenger 13 years of age or older is $14.50 while a children ages 3-12 are $12.50 per person. Children 2 years old or younger are free. The package includes round-trip ferry passage, entry into the museum, a NASW souvenir and 10 percent discount at the NASW Aviation Museum gift shop. Pet friendly, the museum is open rain or shine.
