Cape Region Erase Hate event raises funds
The 4th Annual Erase Hate Fundraiser for the Matthew Shepherd Foundation was held Sept. 28 at Ocean Boulevard Furniture in Lewes. Dennis and Judy Shepard founded the Matthew Shepard Foundation in memory of their 21-year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998.
Created to honor Matthew in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations, the foundation seeks to “Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance” through its varied educational, outreach and advocacy programs and by continuing to tell Matthew’s story.
The event featured catering by Eden, entertainment, along with door prizes and silent auctions. The event raised $25,000 last year and 10 percent of this year’s funds will be donated to Mariner Middle School’s Anti Bullying program.
