Cape Region losing Philadelphia programs

By Jim Truitt | May 15, 2014

Perhaps you have read in the papers, the television station WRDE has obtained the right to broadcast NBC programs in our viewing area through Comcast.  When we became aware of this change, about to be made in June, I contacted Comcast to ascertain if the programming would be coming directly from Philadelphia, on channel 10. Would we be receiving news, weather and sports from Philadelphia?

Comcast informed me this presently was under discussion and no decision had been reached at this time. They, Comcast, would possibly eliminate channel 10 as we know it now. Although we would receive NBC programs we would not receive news, weather and sports from Philadelphia. The station will be known as WRDE-NBC-COAST, TV and will cover the Salisbury, Md. market which includes Sussex County viewers.

WRDE President Bob Backman stated, "The reason he wanted to start an NBC affiliate was because he was watching an auto accident and realized it was not in the Rehoboth area and he needed an NBC affiliate to cover this area." This is the same station, if a lightening storm is in the vicinity, the station will probably go off the air for the duration of the storm.  This has been occurring for the last three years they have been in operation.  The lightening blackouts I am not as concerned about as much as the sports blackout which will occur, along with sports news out of Philadelphia being eliminated to viewers in our area.
