Cape Region’s ethnic markets are in the bagA sampling of what the area has to offer
I remember when my family moved here more than 20 years ago. My mother was in a constant lament about the state of the grocery stores. Moving from the city, she was used to an abundance of ethnic ingredients.

The shock of small-town life was difficult for her, especially in the kitchen.
Lucky for her – and me - she stuck it out long enough that we’ve now got a few really great ethnic stores (and other larger stores with more diverse shelf assortments) to satisfy adventurous foodies. Here are a few I like:
Touch of Italy
• Route 1 in the Shore Plaza, 19724 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth 302 227-3900
• 101 Second St., Lewes, 302-827-2730; 33 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth, 302-227-1500
• 33323 Chesapeake St., Lewes (bakery), 302-703-3090
In the mood for Italian? OK, that's a joke, because I know that anyone in their right mind is always in the mood for Italian. The owners and staff at Touch of Italy have it down to a science. Being Italian-American myself, this place is like a breath of fresh air. They sell authentic Italian deli meats and cheeses, 00 flour and a wide variety of homemade pasta. If you’re on the prowl for some great Italian ingredients, Touch of Italy is your best bet. I love when I walk through the door, I'm immediately transported to a place of Italian-American comfort. They also have a restaurant, so if you aren’t in the mood to do it yourself, you’re in good hands! And can we talk about their pastries? Holy moly, they taste as good as they look.
Jerusalem International Grocery
Tenley Court, Lewes, 644-1700
This is the newest addition the ethnic grocery stores in our area, and it’s really nice. Jerusalem International Grocery boasts a variety of Middle Eastern and Kosher foods as well as lots of specialty items like Halva (one of my mom’s favorites), olives, teas and spices, as well as a great section of sweets a variety of Turkish delights.
I see this place really taking off this summer as people discover it more.

I love shopping in the Latino markets, and we’ve got a variety in Sussex County.
This one is located right next to the Fractured Prune donut shop and has all the Latino staples you are looking for including spices, rice, beans, cheeses and my favorite... Horchata mix. You can make your own horchata, but it’s a lengthy process, and if you are in the mood for a cold dessert drink, there is nothing more satisfying than an ice-cold horchata!
They also have a ton of cleaning products, which are, as they say, fabulouso!
