Cape school board candidate says thanks

By Meyer J. Persow | May 16, 2014

I want to thank all of the voters who came out and supported me for the Cape Henlopen school board. While the result is not what I had hoped for, I am proud of the race we ran and the issues we raised.

I still believe that we need to move away from Common Core and use common sense when it comes to educating our kids and measuring their achievement. We cannot continue to force our teachers to "teach to the test" and expect our kids to be prepared for their future.

I also believe that we need to look at when we hold our school board elections.

Less than 5 percent of the eligible voters took the time to cast a ballot on Tuesday, more than 4,000 less than voted in the referendum April 2. Perhaps we need to work with Speaker Schwartzkopf, Rep. Smyk, and Sen. Lopez and look into holding school board elections in conjunction with the November elections.

Again, thank you to those hardy 161 souls who believed in me and cast their ballot for me on Tuesday and to my fellow candidates for putting themselves forward.
