The Cape softball team opened the season at Milford March 28, losing 13-11 in a game Cape almost got back after letting it get away early.

Cape was down 13-4 entering the top of the seventh inning under windy and cold conditions, then their bats got inexplicably hot.

The Vikings erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh but came up short in spite of rapping out a dozen hits.

Milford pitcher Hannah Scruggs, described by Cape coach Jeff Evans as “crafty,” went the distance to pick up the victory in addition to going 3-4 at the plate, socking a double and a triple.

Tiara Duffy was 2-3 for Cape; that also included a pair of walks.

Khanondy Bradham also had a double for Cape.

Hailey Passwaters got the start for Cape and yielded four first-inning runs while Cape committed two errors behind her. Passwaters was replaced by Riley Shields, who pitched the rest of the game.

Cape will return to action Tuesday, April 9, hosting Sussex Tech before travelling to Laurel Thursday, April 11.

"We had a good preseason then made some mistakes in the first inning against Milford, and we just couldn’t get all the way back,” said Evans.
