Hype is often a harbinger to disappointment. The Cape football team hadn’t played a game in 2013, but preseason prognosticators on social media were talking much noise about Cape being good enough to bounce back to the state title game for the first time in 30 years.

“Next step” is what Bill Collick had been saying since he came back home three seasons ago and put together 5-5, 7-3 and 8-2 seasons.

Cape did take care of Buccaneers business, easing to a 41-12 victory that saw two long touchdowns and a 70-yard run called back in the second period in addition to the Vikings' fumbling away the football on the Milford 10-yard line.

“It was hard to keep the tempo with those call backs on penalties on the other side of the field, " Collick said after coaches watched a Sunday morning digital review that negated a 60-yard pass from Tavon Scott to Maurice Mills and a 70-yard run by Zack Stevenson down the left sideline.

Milford took possession to start the game and quickly caught Cape napping with a 60-yard tailback pass from Octavion Wilson to Jason Parker. Phones pinged across Sussex County, signaling an upset had lifted off in Milford.

The Vikings responded with two first-quarter touchdown drives, touchdown runs by Justin Lopez and Tavon Scott and a Scott two-point conversion as Cape clawed back to lead 14-6.

The Vikings put together another drive in the second quarter with Justin Lopez scoring from 4 yards out.

The 21-6 lead increased to 41-6 in the second half on a pair of touchdowns by Juan Saez of 19 and 18 yards, and a 2-yard touchdown by Justin Lopez.

Notes - Cape's offensive line of Devin Miller, Nick Figun, Anthony Elgin, Brandon Nixon, Tommy Ott, Tyre Maull and Andrew Grau played well. Senior soccer guy Bill Swontek kicked off and lofted two kicks to the goal line. Cape plays at Archbishop Spalding at 7 p.m.,  Friday the 13th. The Cavaliers are 2-0 on the season with wins over Delaware Valley Charter 41-16, and St. Mary’s of Maryland 41-14. Spalding has rushed for 521 over two games and passed for 325. "We have to put together some long drives and keep the ball away from them,” said Cape’s offensive coordinator Herky Billings The Cavaliers beat Cape last season 35-38.
