The Eagles swooped down and snatched the three-game set from the Lady Vikings behind 11 kills by Smyrna senior Morgan Popovich. The 25-11, 25-22 and 25-14 loss dropped the Vikings to 5-1 on the season and a share of second place in the Henlopen Conference.

The Vikings were led by Cameron Wick's 12 blocks and Kristin Perkinson's 12 digs.

"Cameron took their middle hitter out of the contest," said Cape head coach Carrie Evick. "She blocked really well against some good Smyrna hitters. Kristin is just a solid defensive player for us."

After the joy of defeating a talented Dover team last week, the Vikings have been struggling to score points.

"Our serving has been the best part of our game," said Evick. "But we are struggling to put together a solid offense."

"We came a little timid," said senior captain Mallory McDonald. "I think it was a good learning experience, and it'll help us later on in the season."

Cape did have some good news as junior Sarah Tappan returned to the lineup after an injury sidelined her for all of the preseason.

"Sarah will help us blocking on the front line," said Evick.

The Vikings travel to Red Lion Thursday, Sept. 26.
