Cape volleyball: new faces and new hopes for 2014
The Cape Henlopen volleyball team is looking to improve on its 11-4 record of last season, but there are new faces in new positions, and coach Carrie Evick is still assessing the team's preseason workouts.
"We are a very young team," said Evick. "Sarah Tappan is our only senior, and we lost five starters to graduation last year. But I still believe we can be one of the top teams in the Henlopen Conference."
The Vikings hosted a 10-team scrimmage Aug. 23 and played five of those teams.
"We played a lot of different combinations and tried players at different positions," said the Cape coach. "We have new faces and wanted to try different things. We liked what we saw."
The Aug. 27 scrimmage with the Indians of Indian River displayed how the team is continuing to improve.
"We are continuing to build our team chemistry," said co-captain Alison Palmer. "We have lots of new faces, but they are working hard."
"Our team has lots of potential," said co-captain Kira Vitella. "I think we'll be OK."
The Vikings open their 2014 campaign Friday, Sept. 5, at home with Delmarva Christian.
