Driver critical after train strikes car
A 35-year-old Virginia man is in critical condition after his car was struck by a train March 17 in Ellendale.
Brandon A. Rudy of Vienna, Va., was driving a 2013 Subaru Impreza at 1:30 p.m. along Main Street when he failed to stop at the railroad stop crossing signal, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
A Norfolk Southern train with three engines and 22 cars was traveling southbound and it struck the driver's side of the car. The car spun counter-clockwise and stopped on the east side of the tracks, Fournier said.
Rudy was properly restrained; he was trapped in the car and extricated by the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Co. He was taken to Milford Memorial Hospital and transferred to Christiana Medical Center where he is in good condition, hospital officials said.
No one on the train was injured. Traffic on Main Street was diverted for about two hours during the investigation.
