Cathy Walls exhibit to open with Aug. 1 reception in Wilmington

Jul 27, 2014
"Ben's Chili Bowl" by Cathy Walls

Downstate Delaware artist Cathy Walls will be featured with a solo show in the Mezzanine Gallery in the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French St., Wilmington. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, and the show will run through Aug. 31.

Walls is mostly self-taught, and her style is representational and illustrative. She is equally comfortable working in oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels; the medium and colors chosen relate to the scene. A jazz singer letting it wail: Cool blues, green-gray oil paints with pops of red. The busy sidewalk in front of Ben’s Chili Bowl on a hot, sultry D.C. evening: hazy pastels and red-hot colors.

The challenge is not making those people and objects look photographic, it’s using texture, color and composition to recreate the feeling when she first witnessed their story.

Walls’ work hangs in businesses, galleries and art leagues mainly in southern Delaware where she can also be found teaching art to adults and children.
