The Cape home wrestling match versus Sussex Central Jan. 9 couldn’t have started or ended better for the Vikings, with pins by Justin Lopez at 170 at liftoff and Aaron Mattioni at 160 at touchdown. Andre Flowers bumped up to 190 and got a pin, and 220-pound state champion Tomas Ott wrestled heavyweight and got a major decision. Cape led the match 16-9 going into the lightweights

“We have to stay off our backs to stay close to have any chance,” Cape coach Chris Mattioni said after the Golden Knights turned the lights out on Cape 40-25. "They are tough where we’re not and have solid people up and down the lineup. We have Smyrna at home on Friday, and they may be the best in the state.”

Cape got decked in three straight matches at 106, 113 and 120 and suddenly trailed 27-16, and there was no getting home as the Vikings fell 40-25.

There were some great matches coming down the home stretch as Central's Jeremy West bumped up to 132 and beat an athletic Elliot Young 6-3 for his 100th career win. West has been in the Georgetown program since he was 6 years old.

Cape’s Sean Sheehan at 138 came back from a 5-2 deficit, sending his match against Walter Perez into overtime and winning on a takedown 7-5.

“Being in shape from cross country helps me out,” Sheehan said. “I get stronger as the match goes on.”

Cole Elliot of Central and J.J. Currie of Cape battled for three periods at 145 with Elliot winning a 2-1 decision.

Jacob Miller of Central versus Cape’s Austin Smith at 152 went into overtime, with Miller getting the match-clinching takedown to win 4-2.
