Thoughts From the Sidelines

Changes were inevitable for Phillies

By Sumner Spence | Aug 22, 2013

I'm sure most people know the Phillies have changed managers this week. In my opinion they actually did Charlie Manuel a favor. It was quite obvious that, with him in the last year of his contract and with the team playing so terribly, there was little chance he would come back next year. I hope the Phillies get rid of almost half of their team in the off-season and they better clean out the bullpen or we will live through another season just like this one. With about 40 games left, a win here and there would be nice but I'm not counting on anything and will look to see what October brings with the releases and trades. As far as Charlie is concerned, I would love to see him end up being hired back by the Phillies organization as a hitting coach.

It does make me feel old that Ryan Sanberg is the interim manager for the rest of this Phillies' season. I remember watching him play in his last two seasons with the Chicago Cubs when I was just a kid. The only chance he has to become the new manager for next year is if the Phillies finish this season with a .500 record; otherwise he will also be looking for a new job.

As the baseball season is winding down and football is ramping up, I wanted to make sure I made mention of the Little League team from Newark which made it all the way to the Little League World Series. What a great accomplishment, and even though they are not moving on, it was great to see them make it this far and win their first game.

Golf has been on the quiet side this past week except for the Women's Solheim Cup. The tournament was held in Colorado at the Colorado Golf Club. This event is basically the women's version of the men's Ryder Cup. This year the European team won handily over the U.S. team. Putting was the key to their victory. This weekend is start of the Fed Ex Cup, which spans four weeks. Hopefully it will be worth watching.
