CHEER receives Mid-Del grant to provide Christmas dinners and gifts for homebound seniors
CHEER Inc. is the recipient of a grant from the Mid-Del Charitable Foundation to be used to fund Christmas Day meals for 300 homebound seniors in Sussex County. The meal is part of the holiday tradition known as Operation Christmas CHEER.
CHEER, with the help of volunteers, ensures that senior citizens who are spending Christmas alone in Sussex County receive a nutritious midday meal Dec. 25 and Christmas presents to brighten their holiday.
The Mid-Del Charitable Foundation, developed to consolidate the charitable undertakings of The Delaware State Fair Inc. and Harrington Raceway Inc., supports Delaware-based organizations and charitable, educational, and scientific endeavors which address a wide range of issues, including health and human services, the arts, agriculture, education, and the environment.
Thirty-four organizations from throughout Delaware were awarded financial grants during a luncheon ceremony held in Harrington Nov. 13. Mid-Del Foundation Secretary Bill DiMondi said, “We have a great opportunity to give back to the community, and to support these organizations in their endeavors to serve the greater good. In tough economic times, it is a wonderful thing to be able to help our local Delaware residents.”
Area residents who know a senior or a senior couple who will be alone Christmas Day should contact Florence Mason at 302-856-5187 to schedule a meal delivery. CHEER is also seeking volunteers to deliver meals on Christmas Day. To volunteer, call Elizabeth Walls at 302-856-5187.
