Chef Patrick Evans-Hylton dishes up Virginia at Browseabout Books June 21

Jun 12, 2013

Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach invites food-lovers and book-lovers for a special visit by Chef Patrick Evans-Hylton, author of "Dishing Up Virginia, 145 Recipes That Celebrate Colonial Traditions and Contemporary Flavors"to enjoy an evening of culinary insights, a book signing, and a tasting from the book’s recipes prepared by local chefs. The event will take place at 5 p.m., Friday, June 21.

A Johnson and Wales trained chef, food writer and editor, and instructor at the Culinary Institute of Virginia with regular appearances on NPR station 89.5 FM, Evans-Hylton is intimately involved with the Virginia food scene.

To Evans-Hylton, Virginia is “the birthplace of American food.” Determined to cover every part of the state, Evans-Hylton divided"Dishing Up Virginia" into five sections, dedicated to each key region: Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay, Richmond and Southern Virginia, Central Virginia and Wine Country, the Capital Region, and Shenandoah and Western Virginia.

Each section opens with a lively historical glimpse of the region. Interspersed with the extraordinary recipes Evans-Hylton gathered over three years, are stories about indigenous food purveyors, farmers, wineries, restaurants, and more.

Evans-Hylton’s smorgasbord of knowledge features such items as the recipes and menus of Thomas Jefferson, an in-depth look at Virginia’s wines and apples, the Tidewater oyster industry, and the secrets of frying a crab and curing a Virginia country ham.
