The Southern Delaware Choral Society will present its winter concerts Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15. Presenting music from Bach’s "Christmas Oratorio," the chorus will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra conducted by Simeone Tartaglione, conductor of the Newark Symphony Orchestra.

The Dec. 14 concert will be held at 4 p.m. at Georgetown Middle School in Georgetown, and the Dec. 15 concert will be held at 4 p.m. at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.

Johann Sebastian Bach composed the "Christmas Oratorio" for the Christmas season in 1734-35. The work is structured in six sections, representing the six main feast days of the Festival of Christmas: the nativity, the appearance of the angel to the shepherds, the visit of the shepherds to Bethlehem, the feast of circumcision (New Year’s Day), the visit of the three Wise Men, and the role of Herod in the story. Bach intended for each individual section of the Christmas Oratorio to be performed on its appropriate feast day. The version being performed by SDCS has been abridged from the full version for reasons of length and musical convenience, and is mainly composed of choruses and chorales.

“When I started looking for examples of the music to assist me with rehearsing, the first thing that struck me was that all of the recorded versions are sung in German,” said Gail Launay-Tarlecki, executive director. “These concerts will be sung in English, which will make them a real treat for our listeners. We are very excited about the opportunity to perform with Maestro Tartaglione; this is the second time that we have collaborated with members of the Newark Symphony Orchestra, and the musicians always enhance our performances.”

Tickets for both performances are available by calling 302-396-7617; online at;  at Browseabout Books, 133 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach; and at Puzzles, 108 Front St. in Lewes. Cost for the tickets is $20 adults, $8 for students with valid ID. Tickets will be available at the door for both concerts.

After the Dec. 15 concert at Cape, The Buttery Restaurant will host a fundraising dinner to benefit the society.

The Buttery is on the corner of Second Street and Savannah Road. Choral society supporters and restaurant patrons are asked to make reservations in advance by calling The Buttery at 302-645-7755. When they mention the Southern Delaware Choral Society, a generous portion of each check will be earmarked for the organization.
