Coast Guard medevacs man off fishing boat

Apr 15, 2014

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 49-year-old man by helicopter after receiving a call for help April 14.

A crewmember aboard the fishing vessel Mary Elizabeth alerted the Coast Guard at 8 a.m. about an ailing crewmember who was in need of immediate medical attention, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release. The Coast Guard said the boat was about 50 miles offshore from Lewes when they responded.

The man was flown from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City; there was no further information on where the man was from or the fishing vessel originated.

"The crew of the fishing vessel Mary Elizabeth did a great job clearing the deck of the vessel, which aided in the quick deployment of the rescue swimmer onto the vessel to assess the medical condition of the crewmember," said Lt. Cmdr. Ian Stal in the press release. "Good communications between the crew of the vessel and the Coast Guard helicopter crew made for a safe hoist and transport of the fisherman."

No further information was available on the man's condition.
