Coastal Delaware Kiwanis Club announces giveaway for kidsHats and mittens decorate Kiwanis Christmas trees through New Year's Day
The Coastal Delaware Kiwanis Foundation will again sponsor and decorate a tree in the Grotto Parade of Trees. The project runs until New Year's Day at the local Grotto restaurants. Patrons and friends visiting the restaurants can give a donation to vote for their favorite tree. In the case of the Kiwanis Tree, the proceeds will support the club’s service leadership programs such as Key, Builders and K-Kids programs as well as other children’s projects the club supports.
Traditionally, club members used this opportunity to give an extra donation to the foundation before the end of the year. Last year, Past President Jim Kunkle had an idea for Kiwanis to give to children in the community. So, Coastal Delaware Kiwanis set up two trees, one in Rehoboth Beach and another in Bethany Beach close to where the service leadership programs clubs serve. The ornaments are hats and mittens. As the signs say, “Two Little Mittens, One Little Hat Keep Boys and Girls All Warm and Snug On a Cold Winter Day. Need One? Take One!” - a gift from Coastal Delaware Kiwanis Club.
In addition to traditional lights and ornaments, Kiwanians, Key Clubbers and K-Kids hung mittens and matching hats on tree branches and invite those who need mittens and hat to take a set. The trees are easily seen with the bright red or navy hats and mittens. As families take the ornaments, little Kiwanis elves will replenish the supplies, because as every mother knows, kids lose at least two or three sets each winter.
